Scholarship
Background
The Canada-Brazil Awards - Joint Research Projects is the first scholarship program created in the context of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in August 2010 between Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) and the Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education (CAPES) in Brazil.
Objective
The objective of this scholarship program is to support team-oriented research projects between Canadian and Brazilian institutions of higher education in key areas of mutual cooperation, such as democratic governance, prosperity and security, as well as science and technology, thus encouraging research collaboration as well as graduate student mobility.
Description
This scholarship program supports exchanges of PhD students in the context of team-based bilateral research projects. The projects must consist of collaborative research and eventual publication in support of key academic areas of bilateral cooperation or the objectives of the Canada-Brazil Framework Agreement on Science and Technology Cooperation and fully explain the advantages of the partnership for both countries.
Duration
It is anticipated that projects may last up to two years (24 months between September 2011 and September 2013). The terms and conditions of the second year of funding will remain the same as in the first year with the understanding that the composition of the Project Members may change. However, a joint progress report will need to be submitted to CBIE by August 2012 in order receive funding for the second year.

Application
Application Process
Though CBIE and CAPES have issued similar application materials and program guidelines, some important differences exist to reflect country-specific needs. Therefore, applicants from each country should use only the application material and program guidelines issued by their government when completing the application packet.
However, it is important that Project Leads in both countries work together and submit similar proposals to CBIE and CAPES respectively in order to facilitate a comparable evaluation from both sides. Project Leads from both countries must agree with the two parallel applications.
Canadian Project Leads must submit the online documentation below after making arrangements with Brazilian Project Leads. Canadian Project Leads are also encouraged to keep their institution’s ILO abreast of any developments.
Supporting documents required:
The following seven (7) documents must be attached to the online application form:
