Following the launch in June 2010 of the Canada-Haiti Scholarships Initiative (CHSI), 75 Haitian students were awarded an Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarship, offered under the first component of the CHSI. Of these 75 students, 36 recently took part in a week-long democracy tour. The objective of the tour was to expose students to Canadian models of democratic governance, human rights, civil society and the rule of law, to enrich their understanding in those areas and to contribute to the building of linkages between Canadians and Haitians.
Major highlights of the tour included meetings with the Governor General, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, as well as the the Groupe de Réflexion et d’Action pour une Haïti Nouvelle (GRAHN). All discussed key aspects of the relationship between Canada and Haiti and the important role these 36 emerging leaders have in the reconstruction of their country. Overall, the week-long tour included over 30 activities, visits and presentations.
