October 8, 2015 – A number of orientation sessions took place in Latin America and the Caribbean for college, undergraduate, and graduate level students preparing to come to Canada under the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) and the Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship Program. These scholarship recipients will be spending four to six months at Canadian institutions across the country to study or conduct research in various fields of study.

In Peru, students were greeted by Canadian government officials during an orientation session at the Embassy of Canada to Peru, located in Lima. This was an excellent opportunity for students to meet fellow recipients as well as to discuss various aspects of life in Canada with Canadian delegates. A total of 50 Peruvian students have been awarded an ELAP scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year.

In Chile, 34 of the 59 award recipients attended an event held at the Embassy of Canada to Chile, located in Santiago, along with representatives of Universidad de Concepción and a journalist from Universidad Católica de Chile. The event included a presentation about student life in Canada and a presentation from Fernando Valiente of the Red de Investigadores Chilenos en Canadá (REDICEC), the Network of Chilean researchers in Canada, who provided valuable and interesting information on REDICEC and high level research taking place in Canadian universities.

Finally, the Embassy of Canada to Guatemala hosted a group of representatives of Canadian institutions attending the Expo Educa education fair. The representatives attended presentations by the trade and immigration sections of the embassy and had the opportunity to network with each other and share their experiences hosting Guatemalan scholarship recipients and other students and researchers. Seven Guatemalan students were awarded an ELAP scholarship for the 2015-2016 academic year.

The Emerging Leaders in the Americas program and the Canada-Chile Leadership Exchange Scholarship Program are offered by Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada’s International Scholarships Program and were announced by Prime Minister Harper in 2009 and 2007 respectively. The goal of these programs is to support the development of human capital and to promote the next generation of leaders in the Americas while strengthening linkages between Canada’s post-secondary institutions and those in Latin America and the Caribbean.
